Get Ready Nonprofits: New Program Offers Free Emergency Preparedness Training

American Red Cross and NW Natural partner to offer specialized program for critical services

PORTLAND, Ore. — The American Red Cross Cascades Region and NW Natural are launching a new program to help nonprofit organizations in Oregon and Southwest Washington prepare for a natural disaster.

Get Ready Nonprofits will train service groups in steps they can take now to prepare for an earthquake, flood or tornado.

“After a natural disaster, it is important for nonprofits to be up and running as soon as possible to quickly return to serving their clients in need,” said Amy Shlossman, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Cascades Region. “Many of our local nonprofits provide critical services to a population whose needs will dramatically increase in the face of an emergency.”

NW Natural will host the first Get Ready Nonprofits event on Friday, Feb. 13. Attendees at the first session will come primarily from nonprofits that serve families and children in need. Over the course of the year, additional sessions will be offered to nonprofits that serve different audiences.

“This is an expansion of our existing Get Ready program, in which we host community events throughout our territory during September, National Preparedness Month,” said Von Summers, NW Natural community affairs manager. “People are hungry for information on how they can best prepare for a large-scale emergency. Nonprofits need this information, too, because their services will be in high demand following a natural disaster.”
