Smart investments

Install or upgrade insulation in the attic, walls and floors to meet current building codes. The higher the “R” value, the greater the insulation value. Insulation, combined with duct sealing and air sealing, can reduce total energy costs up to 20 percent.

If your water heater is over 15-years old, it could begin to leak. Consider replacing it with a high-efficiency gas tankless or tank water heater. Tankless units can reduce water heating costs up to 35 percent. Consider a solar water heating system, which can cut water heating costs up to 70 percent.

To maximize energy savings, hire a contractor to pinpoint air leakage and professionally air seal your home.

Upgrade to a high-efficiency gas furnace or boiler to trim energy costs up to 15 percent.

Replace old, inefficient windows with high-efficiency double or triple pane windows. New windows can save you up to 30 percent on heating and cooling costs.

When replacing appliances, choose high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® models they cost 10-30 percent less to operate. Choose smaller models to save more energy.
