Message from our President & CEO, David Anderson

October 25, 2016

On October 19 an explosion in Northwest Portland caused injuries and the destruction of nearby buildings after Loy Clark’s Electrical Division damaged our pipeline.

Those impacted by this explosion continue to be in the thoughts of NW Natural employees. This is the kind of event we work tirelessly to prevent, but our employees train to be ready if they are needed.

I am proud of NW Natural’s first responders who arrived on the scene and acted quickly with firefighters to evacuate homes and businesses. The clear-headed actions of the Portland Fire Department, Portland Police and our employees saved lives. Residents and businesses in the area also did their part – calling us when they smelled a gas odor. This was a true partnership in safety.

Here are the simple things you can do to help us keep our system safe:

  • Someone digging into a pipe is the leading cause of serious pipeline accidents, so careful excavation is essential. Under all circumstances, call 811 at least two business days before digging begins to locate any underground utilities.
  • We make natural gas smell bad for a reason. If you smell a rotten egg odor or suspect a leak, leave the area and call us at 800.882.3377. Don’t ignore it or try and look for the cause, simply “Smell. Go. Let us know.” We are available every hour of the day, every day of the year.
  • Get your equipment checked. We offer customers an annual equipment inspection as part of our service; just call 800-422-4012. If repairs are needed, we can recommend a certified HVAC contractor.

NW Natural has been part of this community for 157 years. We have 1,100 employees who live and work here that care deeply about delivering our product safely to the people who rely on us every day. Please know that we will continue to assist in the investigation and help the community recover.

David Anderson, President and CEO

Help for those Impacted:

NW Natural wants to make sure those impacted get the help they need. Loy Clark has asked NW Natural to tell anyone who has experienced a loss associated with the explosion to call Liberty Mutual at 844-839-5491 for instructions on how to submit a claim.

We encourage those affected by this incident who have questions or who need assistance to please call our Customer Contact Center at 800-422-4012 and talk to a representative.

Update as of Nov. 3, 2016

  • RBH (Reliant Behavioral Health),  NW Natural's Employee Assistance provider, is offering counseling at no cost to employees affected by the explosion.  NW Natural will be a contributing partner, along with RBH. Callers should call RBH’s Toll Free Phone Number at 1-866-750-1327. Callers could identify themselves as a member of the NW Natural Community Project, by their business name, or by saying they are a community member from NW 23rd area.
  • NW Natural is encouraging its employees to participate in the NW Businesses shopping day on November 12. We are also encouraging them to shop in that area on Small Business Saturday, the weekend after Thanksgiving. We hope the public will join us in bringing business back to the area.
