Each one of us is responsible for carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere - over 20 tons for the average American during one year. From the cars we drive, to the lights in our homes, to the heat in our buildings, our everyday lives contribute to the creation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

While there's no way to avoid these impacts entirely, Smart Energy is a simple way to reduce a portion of the greenhouse gases caused by our energy use.

When you enroll in Smart Energy, you support projects that prevent greenhouse gas emissions (and that wouldn't be financially viable without your help), and help offset the emissions caused by your home's natural gas use.

NW Natural is the first stand-alone natural gas company in the United States to offer its customers a carbon offset program, and does not profit from the sale of carbon offsets. All Smart Energy customer contributions are used to support these individual projects, to help educate the public about greenhouse gas reductions or to administer the program. You'll see a separate line item for Smart Energy every month on your bill, and each year, NW Natural will send you a report on Smart Energy investments and the resulting carbon offsets.

Residential enrollment options

As a residential customer, you have a choice of two price options:

  • Averaging Option - $5.50 each month, based on an average residential use of 630 therms a year, or
  • Climate Neutral Option - A rate of just over 10 cents for each therm of gas you use. Using this method, your monthly contribution will vary depending on your gas use.
