3. Click on “Smart Energy” and choose which enrollment option works best for you.

For residential premises:

• Average Home option: For a fixed rate of $8 each month, you can address the carbon emissions from the average residential customer’s natural gas use (630 therms per year), or
• Climate Neutral option: For about 15 cents per therm used, you can mitigate 100% of the carbon emissions from your home's natural gas use. The monthly cost of this option varies based on your actual use.

• Smart Energy Circle: Enroll to mitigate approximately 100% of the carbon emissions from your business’ natural gas use and be eligible to receive exclusive marketing benefits. Benefits may be subject to terms and conditions.
• Flat Rate: Select a fixed monthly rate that mitigates a percentage of your carbon emissions from natural gas use. The minimum enrollment rate is $10 a month, and each $1 increment provides a carbon reduction of 77 pounds.

Renewable natural gas is a unique form of renewable energy produced through the capturing of biogas generated by the breakdown of organic materials like agricultural and forestry by-products, food waste and wastewater. Inside landfills, it begins as a biogas as waste decomposes. This biogas is collected and processed into pipeline-quality gas injected into the pipeline structure in place of conventional natural gas. Click here to learn more.

Carbon offsets are created from projects that reduce or prevent the release of carbon emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Renewable natural gas (RNG) transforms organic waste into renewable energy that can be delivered through existing infrastructure to fuel vehicles and run your natural gas appliances. Some projects that produce RNG can also create carbon offsets instead of Renewable Thermal Certificates, but not both.

NW Natural currently does not use Smart Energy carbon offsets or renewable thermal certificates for compliance requirements in Oregon or Washington.
